This whole digital ID conversation reminds me of a picture of a cage full of little chicks clutching ID cards while the big hen draped in the Union Jack barks orders. Funny? Yes. But also a little too real. Because the UK government is now considering a mandatory digital ID system — and the main reason, according to the Prime Minister, is to tackle illegal immigration.

Estonia shows how digital IDs can shine. Citizens there use one secure ID to vote, bank, and access healthcare with ease. India’s Aadhaar system has also unlocked access to services for millions. But look at Nigeria — their rollout left many locked out instead of plugged in. France faced protests, with citizens rejecting what they saw as state control in disguise.

Currently in UK Ministers argue that digital IDs will make it harder for illegal immigrants to work and reduce the “pull factor” for Channel crossings. Sounds like a plan. But is it freedom, or just a cage dressed up as convenience?

As entrepreneurs, we love tech. We know data is king. But when your whole life sits on one card or app, who really is holding the keys? You? Or the state?

The overall Pros and Cons fall into one of the two in my opinion:
• Pro: smoother services, stronger borders, faster access.
• Con: risk of lost privacy, surveillance, and handing over freedom without choice.

At its best, digital ID could be a golden tool. At its worst, a golden cage. And the right to decide should always sit with the people.

Because no one wants to be a chick in the cage when the hen outside is calling all the shots.

What do you think — are digital IDs progress or control?
